Malawi Floods: Japanese city has donates K3.7 m

Japanese city of Minato has donated K3.715 million for Disaster Relief according Malawi Ambassador Reuben Ngwenya.

The donation comes barely a few days after the Japanese Government also released an emergency aid of K74 million to the Government of Malawi meant to help alleviate the suffering of the flood victims.

Malawi Ambassador to Japan Major General Reuben Ngwenya is still proving that he actively engages different stakeholders to assist Malawi as the Mayor of the City of Minato, Masaaki Takei and the Chairman of the City’s Assembly, Nobuhiro Izutsu who have both donated K3.3 million (Yen 800,000) and K415,000 ( Yen 100,000) respectively towards assisting the flood victims.

Minato City is within Tokyo where the Malawian Embassy is located.

“This donation is in response to the plea that the Embassy made to Minato City to assist in cash or in kind to alleviate the suffering of the disaster victims,” reads in part the ambassadors diplomatic memo dated 27th January, 2015.

The Mayor and Chairperson of Minato City Assembly said that they decided to assist Malawi because with their past experiences with disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

Malawi experienced heavy rains which continued for two weeks from the beginning of January this year and this led to the overflow of Lake Malawi thereby causing devastating floods that engulfed most districts in the southern part of Malawi leaving 176 people dead, hundreds of people still missing and over 200, 000 people displaced and in urgent need for assistance.
